Publishing and rollback
Publishing is the only step that puts your cart in front of shoppers, and every publish is saved as a version you can restore later.
What the Publish screen is for
Nothing you change in the builder reaches a shopper until you publish. Colours, modules, shopper copy, rewards and display rules all sit in a draft until then.
Instead of asking “Are you sure?”, the screen shows you a list of what is actually different between your draft and what your storefront is serving right now. It has four parts:
- What will change — the differences between your draft and the live cart.
- Discounts this will create in Shopify — only appears when your cart has reward tiers.
- Publish — the percentage of shoppers who see the cart, and the Publish button.
- Version history — every past publish, with a Restore button.
How to publish
- Go to Carts and click your cart’s name to open it.
- Scroll to the Publish section and click Review and publish.
- Read What will change. If you did not expect one of the lines, go back and check that screen before continuing.
- If a Discounts this will create in Shopify table is shown, read it. Publishing will make a real change to your Shopify discounts.
- Set Show this cart to this percentage of shoppers. Leave it at 100 to show the cart to everyone.
- Click Publish.
When it works you get a green banner: “Published version 3”, with the line “Your storefront is serving this cart now.”
Only one cart can be live on your store at a time. Publishing this cart moves any other live cart back to Draft.
Reading “What will change”
If nothing is different you will see: “Nothing has changed since your last publish. Publishing again would create an identical version.”
Otherwise you get one line per change. Module changes are labelled Added, Removed, Changed or Moved. A Changed line also names the settings that are different, and a Moved line tells you the old and new position, for example position 2 → 1.
Changes outside your modules are reported as a single word each:
| Line you may see | What you changed |
|---|---|
| Design | Your design settings — colours, fonts and the rest of the Design screen. |
| Behaviour | Your cart behaviour settings. |
| Selectors | The theme selectors the cart attaches to. |
| Sticky bubble | Your sticky bubble settings. |
| Footer | Your cart footer settings. |
| Text | Your shopper copy. |
| Rollout | The percentage of shoppers who see the cart. |
| Integrations | Your analytics integration settings. |
| A/B test | A running A/B test has started, changed or stopped. |
| Rewards | Your reward tiers or offers. |
| Display rules | Your display rules. |
| Cart turned on / Cart turned off | The cart itself was switched on or off. |
The comparison is against what your storefront is serving right now. If a different cart is currently live, the changes are listed against that cart, because that is what publishing will replace.
Discounts this will create in Shopify
This table only appears when your cart has reward tiers. It lists one row per tier, with the reward (for example Free shipping or 10% off) and the spend that unlocks it.
Publishing then makes Shopify match what you published. It creates the app’s automatic discount if you do not have one yet, updates it if you do, and removes it if your cart no longer pays anything out. It also updates the checkout rules behind your quantity limits at the same moment.
If you delete the app’s discount from your own Shopify admin, your rewards bar keeps showing progress but stops discounting anything, with nothing to warn you. Publish again and the app recreates it.
Shopify only allows 25 active automatic discounts on a store. If your store is already at that number and this publish would need a new discount, a warning appears at the top of the screen before you publish: “Shopify won’t accept another discount”, telling you to pause or remove one in Shopify admin → Discounts and publish again.
Showing the cart to some shoppers first
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Show this cart to this percentage of shoppers | A number between 0 and 100, in steps of 5. Everyone else sees your theme’s own cart. The screen starts with whatever you published last, or 100 if you have never set it. |
Use a low number to try the cart on a slice of your traffic, then publish again with a higher one when you are happy. Setting it to 0 means no shopper sees your cart, even though it is published.
Version history and restoring
Every publish is saved. The table lists the version number, when it was published, and who published it. The version your storefront is serving is marked Live.
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Version | The version number, with a green Live badge on the one your storefront is serving. |
| Published | The date and time it went live. |
| By | The store the publish was made from. |
| Restore | A Restore button on every version except the live one. |
Restoring an older version
- Find the version you want in the table.
- Click Restore on that row.
- Check the table again. The restored config appears as a brand new version at the top, marked Live.
Restoring does not delete anything. It copies that old version’s settings into a new version, so the version you just replaced is still in the list and you can restore back to it. Restoring also puts the app’s Shopify discount and your checkout quantity rules back to match the version you restored, so your cart and your checkout do not disagree.
A restore does not show a confirmation banner. Look at the version history table instead: a new version at the top marked Live means it worked.
Unpublishing
Unpublishing is on the Carts list, not on this screen.
- Go to Carts.
- Find the cart with the Live badge.
- Click Unpublish in its Actions column.
The cart is removed from your storefront completely rather than left switched off, so shoppers go back to your theme’s own cart and your pages carry no leftover cart data. Your version history is untouched, so you can publish again whenever you want.
You cannot delete a live cart. The Delete button only appears on carts that are drafts, and trying to delete a live one tells you to unpublish it first.
Unpublishing does not remove the app’s automatic discount from Shopify. If you have reward tiers and you unpublish, check Shopify admin → Discounts and pause or remove “Sofcy Cart Rewards” yourself.
If publishing is refused
A red Publishing failed banner means nothing was changed on your storefront — your shoppers keep seeing whatever was live before. The banner names the problem, and usually lists the exact settings underneath. The common ones are:
- A setting is not valid. The list under the banner names each field. Fix them on the screen they belong to and publish again.
- “This cart would promise a discount nothing applies.” Your cart shows shoppers a reward the app cannot actually pay out at checkout. The line underneath says which reward. See the rewards bar page.
- Your cart is too big. Shopify limits how much cart configuration a store can hold. Remove a module, shorten long text, or use fewer hand-picked upsell products.
The same checks run when you restore an old version, so a restore can be refused for the same reasons.
Limitations
- The discount names in the table are not the name you will see in Shopify. The table lists one row per reward tier, named “Sofcy · your cart name · Tier 1” and so on. What is actually created in your store is a single automatic discount called Sofcy Cart Rewards that pays out all of your tiers, your free gift and your offers. Search your Discounts page for that name, not for the row names.
- Reward amounts in that table have no currency symbol. They read as plain numbers, for example “Spend 75.00”. They are in your store’s currency.
- Module changes are listed by their internal name. You may see lines like
Changed upsellorAdded quantity_limitsrather than the friendly module names used elsewhere in the builder. - Restoring shows no success message. Confirm it in the version history table.
- Unpublishing leaves the app’s Shopify discount in place. It is only removed when you publish a cart that no longer offers any reward.
- The “Integrations” line can appear for analytics forwarding settings, but forwarding your cart events on to GA4 or Meta is not available yet. Nothing is sent to those tools today, so publishing that change has no effect on them.
- The screen shows no performance figures. There is no “this version earned X” anywhere in version history, because per-version results are not measured yet.
Publishing is also the moment your reward tiers become a real Shopify discount. If you are setting those up for the first time, read the rewards bar page before you publish, and troubleshooting if your cart does not appear on the storefront afterwards.
